Etymology[]

Unofficial translation. 万能 translates as "omnipotent," "universal," "versatile." The Western metaphysical concept of pure quality underlies 万能.

Teresa's datasheet names ability in Yoma War Record I.[4] Manga and anime allude only.

Description[]

Sensing baseline (S)[5] enables ability, enabling standard sword technique to counter specialized technique and adapt to various combat situations.

This can be done without aid of Detailed Yoma Energy Sensing, or any other technique.

Quality versus Quantity[]

High quality technique can counter lower quality techniques, even if based on higher baselines, or enhanced with Yoma power. Teresa uses only the three basic strokes and standard defenses to defeat the purge team sent after her.[6]

Further, technique—when specialized—cannot adapt to change as readily as non-specialized, Versatility-based generic technique.

History[]

Purge team[]

Guests of honor at an inn, Teresa and Clare spend their last moments of happiness together. Soon the purge team arrives.[7]

Claymore_Teresa_and_Versatility Versatility at work

Teresa ridicules the specialized sword technique of Ilena. After Teresa repels the first attacks of Ilena and Sophia, she then escapes Noel and the inn with Clare.

Out on the street, Teresa does not detect Priscilla's presence, but noticed her shortly afterwards, suprised she can't sensed her Yoma energy. Priscilla introduces herself.[8]

Nickname's origin[]

Ilena explains Teresa's nickname. Teresa has no specialized technique, other than her first-rate Yoma energy sensing. The smile is her only visible quality.[9]

Owing to Priscilla's Yoma Energy Control—total Yoma energy shutdown—Ilena believes Teresa is now helpless.[10]

But one-by-one, Teresa defeats the warriors. And with neither Yoma power, special sword technique, and in the case of Priscilla, Detailed Yoma Energy Sensing.[11] Unclear if Teresa ever uses Detailed Yoma Energy Sensing against Quicksword, despite the Organization evaluation (Yoma War Record I).[12]

Ilena admits underestimating Teresa's skill with ordinary sword technique alone. Ilena realizes that it matters less what particular technique Teresa uses—and more how Teresa uses any technique, in this case being basic sword strokes.[13]
